Nekrasov’s “Sad, gloomy burlac…”: linguistic analysis of the text

The article analyses an image of burlacs (barge hauliers), one of the signifi cant literary images of Russian poet N. A. Nekrasov. Pure linguistic analysis of the important literary image allowed the author to show its importance for the Nekrasov’s poetic world.

The image of burlacs serves as a “marker” revealing the poet’s relation to the theme of labour, the most important for the Russian democratic literature of the 60–70s of the XIX century, and always “implies” an emotional (extremely dramatic) register of the narrative. The article argues that the image of burlacs is depicted in a conventional way by using standard language means.
