1958 — graduated in Russian Language and Literature from Leningrad State University;

1965 — Candidate of Philology; title of candidate thesis: “Sound units in Russian speech and their correlation with the vocal inflections and phonemes”

1977 — Doctor of Philology; title of doctoral thesis: “Modern Russian Literary Pronunciation (Experimental Phonetic Survey)”

1979 — Professor, Department of Phonetics and Teaching Methods of Foreign Languages, St. Petersburg State University

1985 — Head of the Department of General Linguistics, Faculty of Philology, St. Petersburg State University

Since 1984, she worked as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs; then she was appointed as Senior Vice Rector; since May 1993 to April 1994, she undertook the responsibilities of Rector.

In April 1994, she was elected as Rector, St. Petersburg State University.

On April 19, 1999, she was elected as Rector of the University for a second term.

In 2004, she was elected as Rector for a third term.

On February 18, 2008, at a session of the Academic Council following the proposal of the Federal Agency for Education she was elected as the first President of the University
